Code of Conduct
This page outlines the behavior and values we expect from all participants, including staff, teachers, volunteers, and attendees. Our goal is to create an atmosphere of inclusivity, safety, and fun for dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels.
***In this page, the terms "dancers" and "partners" apply to both leads and follows.
Respect
-
Respect will be given to every member of the community, regardless of their values, beliefs, or backgrounds.
-
Discrimination against others based on their identity is NEVER tolerated (e.g., race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliations, physical and mental abilities, etc.).
-
Every member's preferred role (lead/follow) will be respected. If unsure, always ask your partner for clarification on their current role.
-
We recognize that Brazilian Zouk dance often involves close embrace, but each member should be aware of their own and their partner's body language to respect boundaries.
-
If something doesn't feel right and body language fails to alert your partner, verbalize your needs. If you are not heard, we encourage you to stop and walk away at any point during the dance.
-
Be aware and sensitive to your partner's body language. We encourage you to verbally check in with your partner in a tactful manner if you think they may not be enjoying the connection.
-
Consent
-
Always invite your partner to the dance floor. Forcing, pulling, guilting or coercing someone without their consent will not be tolerated.
-
If you receive a "no," don't take it personally. If you give a "no," you do not have to provide a reason for it.
-
Verbal consent is always required for romantic and/or sexual intimacy (e.g., kissing, making out). Please keep these activities off the dance floor.
-
If someone behaves inappropriately with you or others, please report the incident as quickly as possible to a staff member.
-
The reporter can remain anonymous if desired.
-
-
Refrain from giving unsolicited feedback, suggestions, and teaching during workshops and/or the social dance floor. They can be distracting during class and disheartening during socials which are meant to be a safe space for exploration and enjoyment.
-
Please ask for consent before filming other dancers and/or posting videos/photos on social media.

Environment
-
We highly encourage the use of reusable water bottles to minimize waste at our event. A water fountain with filtered water is available at the venue for refilling your bottles.
-
We will look out for each other's belongings. If you come across potential lost items, please turn them in to staff members, and we will make sure to reunite them with their rightful owners (or they will go to a donation box at the end of the weekender).
Hygiene
-
Body hygiene is crucial in partner dancing. Please take regular showers, wash your hands frequently, keep deodorant, mints, gums nearby, and bring extra shirts to change into. Body odor, excessive sweat and bad breath can detract from the quality of dances (they are also the death of gooey dances).
We are delighted to have you join us for a celebration of dance, culture, connection, and unity. To ensure a positive and memorable weekend, we have established this Code of Conduct as our guiding principles. Please read through it and keep it handy for your reference. If you witness a situation where this Code of Conduct is broken or suspect a violation, please speak with a staff member or a volunteer.
After consulting with multiple members of the community and reviewing examples of Codes of Conduct from other organizations, we have modeled our own version based on previous works from The Omni Movement (Oakland), Brazouky (DC), OxygenTango (West LA), Entangled Fusion (LA) and ThursdayJam Contact Improv (Berkeley).
Thank you for adhering to this Code of Conduct and helping us create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable dance weekend for all.
